During more than twenty years as a practicing accountant, John Day has found that clients can easily grasp accounting concepts if presented in the right way. He has discovered common patterns of confusion among clients, and worked out teaching techniques to guide them. His online course, Accounting for Non-Accountants, is an amalgamation of John’s wide accounting experience and unique ability to simplify ideas, and make them fun and interesting to follow.
John Day received a B.S. degree in business administration from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon in 1968. After graduation, he and two college buddies built a 30 foot wooden sailboat, and sailed it to San Diego in 1970. From 1971 through 1975, John worked as a system planner for Bay General Hospital in Chula Vista, California. For the next three years John did consulting work for Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, performing feasibility studies while he was a graduate student at National University in San Diego.
In the fall of 1978, John received his MBA from National University and joined Scripps Newspaper Group as their internal auditor. He reported directly to the treasurer of the board of directors and received extensive training in corporate accounting and tax work.
In June of 1982, John moved his family to Santa Barbara and began an accounting practice as a sole proprietor. The practice grew quickly with clients ranging from manufacturing, retail, and service businesses to non-profit organizations. John developed a philosophy that assumed that the clients wanted and needed to know how the basic functions of accounting were applied to their businesses. He developed mini-seminars on the subject for interested clients.
After seven years, John was invited to merge his accounting practice with a large Santa Barbara CPA firm and became their manager of business services. Three years later, John left the firm, choosing to remain a sole proprietor.
John continues his accounting and tax practice in Santa Barbara by telecommuting. He lives with his wife, Susan and their two teenage children in a country home outside of Sonora, California, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. He enjoys camping, fishing, sailing and tennis.
